WANTED FOR OUR NEXT ANTHOLOGY
SHORT ACCOUNTS OF EXTRAORDINARY, UNEXPECTED, PERCEPTION-CHANGING, POSITVE EXPERIENCES WITH SPECIFIC MEMBERS OF THE WILD COMMUNITY OF NATURE
PLEASE NOTE THAT SUBMISSIONS WILL OPEN IN MID JUNE.
Native West Press seeks short, creative nonfiction (under 1,000 words) and poetry for a collection of direct, unexpected experiences with wild creatures (yes, including insects, arachnids, fish, etc.) who had the effect of restoring or enhancing the writer’s sense of psychological well-being. The editors are particularly interested in reading unique accounts of authentic, personal encounters with wild animals who created a positive effect on the writer’s mental (and physical) health, such as restoring the author’s faith and joy, evoking respect for the unexplainable, helping the author heal from illness or trauma, reducing stress, and/or moving the author to a state of enhanced sense of connection to the living, natural world.
What We Are Not Seeking: Please note that we are NOT seeking general abstractions, such as “being out in beautiful nature,” or anything to do with domestic animals or pets, such as dogs.
What We Are Seeking: We ARE looking for unanticipated, special, profound occurrences in which the creature was not intimately known to the author prior to the experience.
How to Submit: We strongly prefer submissions for consideration to be sent via traditional
post (SASE must be included) to Editors, Native West Press, P. O. Box 12227, Prescott,
AZ 86304; however, we will accept email submissions pasted within the text of the email to nativewestpresATcableoneDOTnet. (Notice the address has only one s rather than two at the end before the host part.) Please do NOT send attachments. Attachments will automatically be deleted unopened.
Simultaneous Submissions Policy: While simultaneous submissions are NOT preferred, they may be submitted for consideration, provided we are notified if the submitted material is accepted for publication elsewhere—either online or in print. Please note that authors whose works are accepted for publication will be contracted for First North American Serial Rights and the condition that the work accepted will not appear in electronic form prior to publication in the anthology. All rights will revert back to the author after the accepted piece’s debut. We would appreciate the courtesy of proper crediting of the anthology as the piece’s first publication.
Response Time: Response time is two to four months (or sooner) from the time of receipt of submission.
Payment: Authors whose works are selected to appear in the anthology will receive one contributor copy as payment.
